St. Aidan’s Church Kinlough was probably built sometime around 1740 when the Penal Laws were being relaxed. Local tradition has it that the site was given by a Farrell McGowen who lived behind the church. This gift was much against the wishes of the local landlords, the Johnstons. St. Aidan’s is marked on William Larkin’s map of 1819. The shape is basically that of the present church but without the nave. The rebuilding of the present church was begun in 1854. This date is inscribed on a stone over the main door. The nave was built, the Rose Window was put in the sanctuary, plain windows in the transepts, and the building was re-roofed. The new church was consecrated by Dr. Conaty on 21st December 1866.

Repair work to the church was carried out between 1937 and 1940 with James Donnelly of Enniskillen as architect and James Maguire as contractor. In 1971 the sanctuary was adapted to suit the new liturgy. In 1980 further repairs to the church and grounds were carried out.

At the present time in 2001 plans are in place to have the church re-roofed and completely refurbished with David Cullivan as architect.
